Who we are!
Founders
W.R. Bob & JoAnn Johnston
Our vision and drive comes from the many years of guidance and teachings from W.R. Bob and JoAnn Johnston, the founding members of Fordel. Bob and JoAnn(His wife of 42 years) spent their lives dedicated to building the Fordel Legacy from hard work, family unity, honesty, high quality products and by treating all customers and employees with the highest of respect and integrity. As an only child, Mr. Johnston lost his father at a very young age and was forced to learn things very quickly on his own with limited resources and support. Early on he farmed primarily row crops such as cotton and grains and quickly learned that Melons was the item that he would build the business around. In 1969 he formed Silver Creek Packing with three other farming partners which expanded rapidly throughout the 70’s and 80’s and became one of the largest Melon Suppliers in the USA.
Randy & Alicia Johnston
In 1987, he decided to sell his interest in Silver Creek Packing and start his own growing, packing and marketing company in Mendota, CA. Fordel was one of the first companies in California to “Field Pack” Cantaloupes and Honeydews. His goal was to grow, pack and market only the most mature, highest color and best eating Melons possible. Fordel’s “state of the art” forced air cooling facility kept the fruit dry and cooled the Melons down quickly to their proper temperature allowing them to get to the destination ripe and ready to eat.
Children
Blake, Jayden & Randi
Fordel Melons have been enjoyed by over 300 million consumers over the years. The quality expected from the Fordel brand has been made possible by the dedication, hard work and efforts of the entire staff who work hard every day for you at making a dream turn into a reality. Randy and Alicia Johnston have been involved with the farming, harvesting, cooling and marketing of fresh produce their entire life.
Daughter Xandria & Husband Frank with
Grandchildren Frankie & Reign
They understand what it takes and have decided it was time to start back where Bob and JoAnn left off and continue to build on the Fordel Legacy that was created for them and now for their children and grandchildren. With a strong base of grower partners, Fordel produces and markets only the highest quality products the brand is known for. Specializing in year-round supplies of Melons and Berries, Fordel also supplies other seasonal fruits and vegetables that align with our vision and direction. Family is what drives us and our Quality is what will keep the Fordel Legacy and brand going for generations to come.
